In Greece, policymakers have always treated coal as a “national fuel”, and the country has persistently attempted to exempt itself from the environmental targets set by the EU. Germany announced it would spend billions to quit coal — but not for another 18 years. Why is it so expensive and politically complicated to phase out of coal? And why is it important to cover the coal phase-out? We'll get an insight from two EU countries that differ in size, politics and energy policies.
