The session will address how medical investigative journalism differs from medical reporting. Questions will be welcome throughout the talk, so bring your concerns, confusion, and triumphs for an airing. We’ll review some basic rules of medical science and why those rules still apply during a pandemic – despite the claims of officials and doctors who are hitting panic buttons and saying the rules are hindering progress in a time of need. The whole planet is waiting for a pandemic vaccine. Many governments signed pre-buy deals with pharmaceutical companies, many of whose are frantically working to win the race for the first Sars-Cov-2 jab. Nevertheless, it’s not a secret for all experts that it is hard for a safe and effective vaccine to be developed in such a short time. Also, the industry was so far unsuccessful when it tried to come to a vaccine for other Coronas. So, how can an investigative journalist work on this issue of such a big public interest?
Rebecca Chandler will tell us what we do know and what we don’t when a vaccine is approved by the regulatory authorities. She will give us an overview of how we learn more after approval. With her help, we’ll put together the areas of interest and worry for muckrakers to dig deeper on, in the context of Covid19 vaccines.

The Shell Papers: Freedom of Information requests are part of the story

In April 2019 Platform Authentieke Journalistiek (PAJ) and Follow the Money started the Shell Papers: a joint research project into the ties between the Dutch government and Royal Dutch Shell. At the start of this project PAJ filed a total of 17 FOI requests demanding copies of all Shell-related documents from nine ministries, three provinces and five municipalities. PAJ asked the governing bodies to disclose all their documents related to Shell—the country's largest multinational—from the past fourteen years. They developed an innovative digital tool to engage our readers in this long-term research project: the FOIA-Dashboard. The dashboard proved to be an important strategic asset during the tough negotiations with the Dutch government. In this presentation Bas van Beek and Roger Vleugels will focus on the use of strategy within politically sensitive FOI procedures.

Data is often flung as unrefuted evidence. But its integrity, its collection and its trappings are frequently overlooked, leading to misleading journalism. And so can a lack of understanding of the basic numbers we report or read daily. Can you prove that one thing, such as poverty, triggers another, such as children's poor results in school tests? In this hands-on class with Crina Boros, an award-winning, London-based investigative reporter and data journalism trainer, you will learn about the power of relational statistics with a hands-on introduction to linear regression. The concept is broken down and every element of how to get from idea to result interpretation is explained. Some familiarity with statistics is preferable, but if you've been doing DDJ for a couple of years, that would also work. You will need Windows: Excel 2007 or newer, full versions; access to the internet; Apple: Excel 2016 or newer; machine permission to download data on your computer. Other spreadsheet apps, such as Excel online, Numbers, Office Libre etc., will not work.

Studying maritime conventions to unveil arms trade? UN treaties to trace pesticides? Kristof Clerix from Belgian news magazine Knack was investigating international arms trade. Obviously arms were transported by sea. So he set out to study international maritime conventions, because there must be a paper trail? There was! The second speaker is Staffan Dahllöf, freelance journalist publishing in Denmark and Sweden. Along with a European team he investigated pesticides causing brain damages in children - clearly an environmental problem. He used the international convention of access to environmental information and ended up filing a complaint against the state of Sweden.

What if you need to gather many different pieces of data or information for your investigative project? And what if that data or information are not in spreadsheets or tables you can scrape but scattered around and connected to many different people or institutions or other types of sources? That's when crowdsourcing could come in really handy: you reach out to all those sources or devise a method for them to get in touch with you, so that you can compile the required data and information. That's the theory of it: in reality, crowdsourcing can be a complex if potentially very useful methodology. Carbon offset schemes promise to compensate for the emissions caused by private individuals and companies by donating to emission reduction projects, such as reforestation. Whistleblowers take great risks to bring information to the public. Media set up secure portals for contact, but are we as journalists skilled enough to handle the risks that whistleblowers run in working with them? In order to help sustain an independent press and protect employees who report wrongdoing, abuses of power, and crimes, we need to know how to have secure and effective communication between whistleblowers, whistleblower support organisations and journalists.
