EU's dirty not-so-little 'secret'

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the European Green Deal – an ambitious plan to tackle the climate crisis - as Europe’s 'man on the moon' moment. Yet, Investigate Europe discovered that EU countries sabotage their climate goals by subsidising the fossil sector by more than €137 billion per year. How did they crack the numbers, and why does EU sabotage its own climate protection policy? Join us to explore these (and other) questions with Investigate Europe's journalists.

Buy a stove for a farmer, plant a tree: where does your climate compensation money really end up?

Carbon offset schemes promise to compensate for the emissions caused by private individuals and companies by donating to emission reduction projects, such as reforestation. But is this just a feel-good solution? Journalists from the Danish newspaper Politiken investigated what sort of carbon credits Danish companies invest in, and found out that many of them were fraudulent. Join us to learn how they did it, and how you can track the carbon credit money too.
Read one of the stories from the investigation: "Russian oligarch made a fortune selling fraudulent climate compensation - now he wants to buy a Formula 1 seat for his son" (PDF version here)

What if the data you need for your reporting doesn't exist? You can gather it yourself, or consider to ask for help the community that is directly impacted by the issues are investigating. Correctiv newsroom has done the latter – they decided to crowdsource some of their investigations. Correctiv journalists Annika Joeres and Katarina Huth will explain us how they've done it, and tell us why journalism should be constructive when covering climate issues.
