Two court cases are currently being heard concerning big leaks to journalists in the past decade. The results of these cases may have major implications for journalists all over Europe in the future. The speakers in this session analyse the Assange extradition case in the United Kingdom and the Pinto leak case in Portugal. The Assange case concerns the Wikileaks files - on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Pinto case concerns the Football Leaks - on tax avoidance in Big Football and Luanda Leaks, all publications are of high public interest. The information revealed in these leaks was published in European mass media and beyond. Since then, the public and Europe's journalists have seen news about the dramatic arrests followed by the indictments of Julian Assange and Rui Pinto respectively. Both indictments have a potentially significant chilling effect. Delphine Halgand, director of the Signals Network has followed the Rui Pinto case closely since his arrest in January 2019, and Bruce Shapiro from Columbia University has analysed the Julian Assange case. In this session, they will raise awareness to the principal questions in the two cases and how that could significantly affect the work of journalists in the future.
