Crowdsourcing data and information for investigative projects

What if you need to gather many different pieces of data or information for your investigative project? And what if that data or information are not in spreadsheets or tables you can scrape but scattered around and connected to many different people or institutions or other types of sources? That's when crowdsourcing could come in really handy: you reach out to all those sources or devise a method for them to get in touch with you, so that you can compile the required data and information. That's the theory of it: in reality, crowdsourcing can be a complex if potentially very useful methodology. In this session, Justus von Daniels, editor-in-chief of non-profit investigative newsroom Correctiv, will share their experience using CrowdNewsroom, a platform developed by Correctiv, and then we will discuss the possibilities and challenges of crowdsourcing data and information for investigative journalism.
