In some countries, the EU trade secret rules are implemented on national level with serious implications for journalists and for access to information. Stéphane Horel and Le Monde are challenging the French implementation of the Trade secrets directive in court after they were denied access to documents on medical devices at the occasion of the ICIJ Implant Files investigation. In his work on international financial flows, Edouard Perrin anticipated the problems at an early stage and gathered journalists in the field to address them.
